Consensual Incest

What do you think about the Mackenzie Phillips revelation? In case you’ve been living under a rock, let me summarize: The former tv star / daughter of Mamas and the Papas founder John Phillips, has come out with a book titled HIGH ON ARRIVAL in which she admits to having a consensual sexual relationship with her musician father. You can see her talking about it on the Oprah website. Apparently, they used to do a lot of drugs together (he turned her on to cocaine when she was a mere teen) and, on the night before her wedding to Freddy Sessler (Keith Richards’ best friend), she awoke from a pill-induced coma to find her father having sex with her. They continued to have consensual sex for the next ten years, after which time she ended the affair when she discovered she was pregnant. Not knowing who the father was (her dad or her husband), she got an abortion.

Wow.

I must be living under a rock here then...hadn't heard that story before. :-) Was she underage when her father first had sex with her?

I don't know what I think about consensual sex between relatives...It's still a punishable offence here in Germany! When I really think about it though, I can't really find anything that wrong with it, as long as both participant are of age, it's consensual and no children are conceived. I think one of the reasons (if not THE reason) it's still considered a crime over here is that there's a high chance the children will have numerous disabilities. But if that's taken care of...who am I to judge?!

Yes, Mackenzie Phillips was of legal age. The first time (at least as far as she knows) was the night before her wedding. Jeesh. It was basically a rape because she was passed out when her father took advantage of her. But all the times after that were consensual. So so weird.

I suppose as long as everything is consensual and of legal age, there's not much you can do about it. But if that's not emotionally unhealthy, then I don't know what is.

I agree, it's really really weird, and probably not very healthy, from a mental standpoint. But I don't see why it should be wrong from a legal point of view.

I think it's interesting that consensual incest is illegal in Germany. They seem to have so many laws over there; everything is very carefully regimented! I don't think it's illegal here in the States, but I agree, it's probably not a legal issue.

It caught me by surprise the first time I heard about the story of John Phillips and his daughter a few days ago. I listen to "The Mamas and The Papas" since my teenage times and I still do every now and then. I like their music.
I think incest is disgusting. Final stop. Thank God that Cass Elliot is the face of the group. At least for me she is. Or was.
