Question of the Week: Expatriotism

Would you accept $1,000,000 to leave the country and never set foot in it again?

Yes. This would be a difficult decision and would involve a lot of anxiety, but at the end of the day I think I would do this. I like this country (in an ambivalent sort of way), but I certainly do not love it. I have always felt displaced here; maybe this is because I am second-generation Korean-American.

It has always been my dream to live in London and if not there, then Paris. I love Europe and I think they have their values sorted out properly in a way America does not. Once I remember hearing on the radio someone make a comparison between Americans and Europeans. He said: “In Europe, you belong to something. In America, you just have your belongings.” I think that about sums it up.

I yearn to be a part of a community. I like the fact that in Europe they understand that smaller is better. America is just too big, too cumbersome, to create any kind of social intimacy or governmental centralization. All countries should be no larger than France.

I also yearn to live in a society that is less competitive and less materialistic. Sure, I know Europe has its problems, but I would be willing to deal with that as I feel their problems are not as severe as the problems we have here in America (such as crime, extreme economic disparities, a general and pervasive anti-intellectualism, a sort of rugged individualism that leaves one feeling lonely and anxious all of the time because everyone is only out for himself/herself).

My only regret is that I would not be able to see my best friend and father as frequently as I do now; this would be the most difficult aspect of this decision.

What about you?
Please indicate what country you are from.

Question of the Week: The Price of Beauty

Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by five years to become extremely attractive?
Definitely. Never underestimate the power of beauty and the happiness it can bring a person. How you look affects who you are and how people treat you, simple as that. I know this from personal experience. As an adolescent I was chubby and wore Coke-bottle glasses. I was homely as hell. Then I went off to college, lost the weight, and got contact lenses. I also grew my hair long. The transformation was complete and my life changed dramatically: people were much nicer to me, I got better service in department stores and restaurants, men looked at me with longing. It was all very flattering to the ego. Anyone who says looks don’t matter is either flat-out lying or is just plain stupid.

What about you?

I'm in Love with Brian Kinney

Like a lot of people who watched QUEER AS FOLK, my all-time favorite character was Brian Kinney. I mean, what’s not to love? He’s handsome, successful, cruel, secretly wounded, and always on the prowl with that lean, pantherlike body of his.

But behind the spacious loft and Philippe Starck accessories lies a profound fear of rejection. Behind the prestigious corner office and ruthless, calculating persona breathes a benevolent soul. And behind that cool, carefully maintained, Armani exterior is a man falling in love against his own will. Without a doubt he is the most compelling character in the show.

I pretty much watched the show just to see him and tolerated the other three or four sub-plots. Not that the other characters weren’t interesting (and I happen to think Emmett Honeycut is a hoot), but I’ve always been in it for the Brian Kinney scenes – especially the bedroom ones. Below are two clips: The first is a poignant scene wherein Brian hires a male prostitute who, not coincidentally, looks like the boyfriend who just left him. It starts about 30 seconds into the clip … The second clip is a hot and steamy sex scene where Brian fucks a guy at the office. Enjoy!

New Christmas Song from George Michael

Just a sneak peak of DECEMBER SONG, George Michael's latest. Should be made officially available for download on the official website on Christmas day. Lyrics are below the clip. What do you think of it?

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true

Sweet December song
The melody that saved me
On those less than silent nights
When snow would fall upon my bed
White sugar from JesusA
And take me to the day
She could always smile
The Virgin Child would always show, you see
Just to save me(Just to save me)

There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that Mum and Dad decided
That the war would have to wait

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stayI could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
So I dreamed of Christmas

Maybe since you’ve gone
I went a little crazy
God knows they can see (the child)
But the snow that falls upon my bed
That loving I needed
Falls every single day
For each and every child
The Virgin smiles for all to see
But you kept her from me

There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that Mum and Dad decided
That the war would have to wait
There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
And so I dreamed of Christmas
Yes, I dreamed like you

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true
